Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is an annual championship game of the sport National football league(NRL), where the highest level of professional football in the united states is played. The super bowl used Roman numerals to help identify each games that have been played rather the having the year. For example Super Bowl XLV in 2010.

The day which the Super Bowl is played is considered by the Americans an unofficial national holidays, this is called "Super Bowl Sunday". An interesting fact about the Super Bowl, it is the 2nd largest day for USA food consumption. In addition, the Super Bowl has frequently been the most-watched American television broadcast of the year; the four most-watched broadcasts in U.S. television history are Super Bowls. In 2015, Super Bowl XLIX became the most-watched American television program in history with an average audience of 114.4 million viewers, the fifth time in six years the game had set a record, starting with the 2010 Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is also among the most-watched sporting events in the world, almost all audiences being North American, and is second to soccer's UEFA Champions League final as the most watched annualsporting event worldwide.

Alex's Favourite Sport

Tennis has always been one of my favourite sports during my childhood, back in primary schools I used to train three times a week and made the top 5 in the tournaments that was held. As a child, my favourite tennis player was Novak Djokovic and i always looked up at him as a roll model. As  time flew by tennis was slowly decreasing on my priority list. In high school sports was something that was compulsory which kept my interest in tennis even though i went from three days a week to one day a week.

Tennis was something I really enjoyed as it gave you a satisfied feeling when you beat you're opponent in a really close game. Maybe people have asked me isn't that the same with every other sport but tennis is a one on one game and doesn't involved the team. So when you win you fell more hyped up .

Badminton's competitions

The BWF organizes several international competitions, including the Thomas Cup, the premier men's international team event first held in 1948–1949, and the Uber Cup, the women's equivalent first held in 1956–1957. The competitions now take place once every two years. More than 50 national teams compete in qualifying tournaments within continental confederations for a place in the finals. The final tournament involves 12 teams, following an increase from eight teams in 2004. The Sudirman Cup, a gender-mixed international team event held once every two years, began in 1989. Teams are divided into seven levels based on the performance of each country. To win the tournament, a country must perform well across all five disciplines (men's doubles and singles, women's doubles and singles, and mixed doubles). Like association football (soccer), it features a promotion and relegation system in every level. Badminton was a demonstration event in the 1972 and 1988 Summer Olympics. It became an official Summer Olympic sport at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and its gold medals now generally rate as the sport's most coveted prizes for individual players. In the BWF World Championships, first held in 1977, currently only the highest ranked 64 players in the world, and a maximum of four from each country, can participate in any category. In both the Olympic and BWF World competitions restrictions on the number of participants from any one country have caused some controversy because they sometimes result in excluding elite world level players from the strongest badminton nations. The Thomas, Uber, and Sudirman Cups, the Olympics, and the BWF World (and World Junior Championships), are all categorized as level one tournaments. At the start of 2007, the BWF introduced a new tournament structure for the highest level tournaments aside from those in level one: the BWF Super Series. This level two tournament series, a tour for the world's elite players, stages twelve open tournaments around the world with 32 players (half the previous limit). The players collect points that determine whether they can play in Super Series Final held at the year end. Among the tournaments in this series is the venerable All-England Championships, first held in 1900, which was once considered the unofficial world championships of the sport. Level three tournaments consist of Grand Prix Gold and Grand Prix event. Top players can collect the world ranking points and enable them to play in the BWF Super Series open tournaments. These include the regional competitions in Asia (Badminton Asia Championships) and Europe (European Badminton Championships), which produce the world's best players as well as the Pan America Badminton Championships. The level four tournaments, known as International Challenge, International Series and Future Series, encourage participation by junior players.

Sports betting?!

Sport betting is one of the most popular ways sport fans are about to make money. Recently a statistics published by the United Nations showed that sport betting is roughly estimated to worth more than $1 trillion USD, where the vast majority (90%) comes from illegal gambling.
Patrick Jay, a British betting expert, once said almost 65% comes from soccer betting, 12% from Cricket and Tennis, where Asian is the centre of sports gambling.
Not everyone thinks sport betting is as big as what Patrick Jay thinks, only 1 in every 10 people think the sport betting system is much bigger then most people think it is.

The State of NRL Transfers

After various news outlets have reported on rumors of Manly's star play-maker Daly Cherry-Evans (picture right) considering backing out of his multi-million dollar deal to join the Gold Coast Titans in 2016, various NRL players are calling for the removal of the controversial Round 13 clause that allows players to back out of signed contracts by that time in the season.

In my opinion, the Round 13 clause is extremely stupid. Once a player commits to a deal and signs a contract that should be final. They shouldn't have until a certain date to turn around and break their word, rendering contracts useless. If Cherry-Evans goes through with this back-out it will be an enormous blow to the Titans who were wanting him to become the new face of the club. They even had to let go off a few players to get him there.

However, over the past few days Cherry-Evans has been hounded by media and he has come out stating that he in fact won't be backing out of his initial deal.

In the western area of Sydney the in-form Parramatta Eels aren't too worried about their deal with Manly's other star play-maker, Kieran Foran (pictured below), backing out of his multi-million dollar deal with them. Eels CEO has stated that "they discussed the Round 13 clause with Kieran" during the signing process.

Sadly, this Round 13 clause is put in place to support the club the player in question is leaving, not the one their joining. This is a pressing issue and I am sure we will hear more and more about it if an abundance of players continue to break their word and back out of their contracts.

How to play badminton

The objective of the game is simple, that is to hit the shuttle over the net so that it lands in your opponent's court before it can be returned. You can hit the shuttle fast, slow, high, flat or low. You can smash it with maximum power or use the most delicate touch shots. A rally is started when the shuttle is returned. Each rally begins with a stroke known as the serve. This gets the shuttle into play, and from then on you will be engaged in a battle to outwit your opponent by using strokes which aim to increase your chances of winning that rally. You can win the rally when: - You hit the shuttle on to the ground in your opponent's court. - Your opponent makes a mistake and hits the shuttle out of court. - Your opponent has committed a fault according to Badminton Rules. There are two sides to the racket head, the forehand face and the backhand face. You can hit the shuttle with either of them. Learn how to use the forehand and backhand grips first before you start. Now, try a few simple strokes with the shuttle before going on court to play a game. Use the forehand grip and practice hitting the shuttle upwards with the forehand face of the racket. Change to the backhand grip and do the same, using the backhand face of the racket. First try hitting the shuttle high into the air, then hit it more gently so that it stay closer to the racket. Next, hold the shuttle by its feathers with the fingers of your non-racket hand. Using an underarm action, hit it forward over an imaginary net. This is the action you will use when you serve. Practice this action both on your forehand and backhand. In this early practice you should hit the shuttle with a flat racket face. Later on there will be times when you slice across the base of the shuttle with an angled racket face. After a little practice, you will be able to hit the shuttle in different directions and to various distances. You can now begin to play badminton with your friends. I am sure you will love the game and want to play more and better.

Manchester United Rumours

Rumours are buzzing that the Dutch Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal, is looking to recruit 3 star new players.

Dortmund's Mats Hummels in action
United are well in front with a bid over $48 million for the Borussia Dortmund defender and German International Mats Hummels. Hummels rejected United’s offer last season, but with Dortmund’s rather bad season and United playing in the 2015/16 Champion’s League, it is looking likely that he will be in the red soon.

Dutchman Memphis Depay skilling it up in the 2014 World Cup

Various news outlets are reporting the inevitable signing of Dutch, PSV left winger, Memphis Depay. Depay is an extremely skillful player who  would have been on many teams radars after he had an incredible 2014 World Cup alongside star Netherlands players Arjen Robben and United striker Robin van Persie.

Depay’s PSV teammate Georginio Wijnaldum has declared that he “wants to play in a stronger league than the Eredivisie”, trying to tempt his former mentor Louis van Gaal to recruit him.

Manchester United are a strong club, one of the top 5 in England. They aren't lacking money and aren't afraid to go out on a limb to recruit young players that could turn into stars. It will be interesting to see who they do end up recruiting.

Badminton's rules

Singles At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service court. If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate service court. If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve from the appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even. Doubles A side has only one ‘service’. The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram. At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court. If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves again from the alternate service court. If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side becomes the new serving side. The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when their side is serving.

Basic Soccer Rules

Soccer is one of the simplest sports in the world. This may be the reason why it's the most popular sport in the world. Here you will find the rules to play the game. The rules become more complicated and technical with the level of play. But even at the professional level they are quite simple. FIFA, International Federation of Football, holds the official rules to the game. According to them, the official rules may be modified in their application for players of under 16 years of age, female soccer players, veteran players (over 35 years of age), and for players with disabilities.

1.    Size of the field of play,
2.     Size, weight and material of the ball
3.     Width between the goal posts and height of the crossbar from the ground.
4.     Duration of the periods of play

5.     Substitutions

Is Esports really a sport?

There has been many debates on if computer gaming (electronic sports) is really a sport.

Esports is the umbrella term for organized, competitive computer gaming, usually between professionals. Competitive computer gaming has been around since the days of Pong in the 1970s. As with traditional sports, Esports consists of many different games. But those games don’t necessarily mimic traditional sports. For example, in Aspen the game of choice is Counter-Strike, a first-person shooter in which you choose to be either a terrorist or a counter-terrorist.

According to ESPN’s president even though it has the word sports in the title is it not considered as a sport. The president say playing professional League of Legends and Dota 2 isn’t the same as playing professional football or basketball. The ESPN considers it as a competition like chess and checkers. Even though last year the United States Government recognized League of Legends players as professional athletes.

History of Basketball

The history of basketball started with its invention is 1891 in Springfield by a Canadian physical education instructor called James Naismith as a less injury prone sport than football. The game had established really quickly and had been very popular as the 20th century has progressed.

Dr James Naismith in December 1891 had published 13 rules for the new game. He divided his class of 18 into two teams of nine players each and set about to teach them the basics of his new game. The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point was scored, the game was halted so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. After a while, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were removed. The first public basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.

International Rugby League

With a test match between arch-rivals Australia and New Zealand just around the corner, I thought this would be the perfect time to discuss the state of the international game.

Despite a spectacular Rugby League World Cup in 2013, and an extremely exciting 4 nations tournament at the end of last year, International rugby league is slipping in terms of popularity in comparison to the regular season and the highly anticipated State of Origin (SoO) series.

Captains from each qualifying country in the 2013 RLWC.
It just doesn't make sense, yet that's how it is.

Well, why isn't the international game more popular? Simply put, this is because Rugby League is only a very popular sport in a small amount of countries, this is evident by the quality of national teams around the world. The main countries including Australia, New Zealand, and England.

Yet if you think about it, playing at a national level for your country in any sport is arguably the highest honor an athlete can achieve.

Thankfully as the sport as a whole grows, more people around the world will be playing it, which leads to more talent coming through. This will lead to the international game becoming more competitive and thus naturally more exciting.

Only as the game grows and progresses further will we see how the international level of League turns out.

Great photograph of England and Fiji huddled together before their match.
