International Rugby League

With a test match between arch-rivals Australia and New Zealand just around the corner, I thought this would be the perfect time to discuss the state of the international game.

Despite a spectacular Rugby League World Cup in 2013, and an extremely exciting 4 nations tournament at the end of last year, International rugby league is slipping in terms of popularity in comparison to the regular season and the highly anticipated State of Origin (SoO) series.

It just doesn't make sense, yet that's how it is.

Well, why isn't the international game more popular? Simply put, this is because Rugby League is only a very popular sport in a small amount of countries, this is evident by the quality of national teams around the world. The main countries including Australia, New Zealand, and England.

Yet if you think about it, playing at a national level for your country in any sport is arguably the highest honor an athlete can achieve.

Thankfully as the sport as a whole grows, more people around the world will be playing it, which leads to more talent coming through. This will lead to the international game becoming more competitive and thus naturally more exciting.

Only as the game grows and progresses further will we see how the international level of League turns out.
